India fast bowler Gurnoor Brar said he enjoyed bowling in New Zealand’s seam-friendly conditions after producing a four-wicket performance in India’s four-run victory over New Zealand in the second ODI at Hnry Stadium on Saturday.
Gurnoor returned figures of 4-30 and was named Player of the Match. He had also taken 3-44 in the opening ODI, making the most of the bounce and pace on offer in New Zealand.
Speaking after the match, the 6-foot-5 pacer said, “I really enjoyed it. Bowling here in New Zealand, the bounce and the pace really helped me, so I enjoyed it,” during the post-match presentation.
Reflecting on the difference between Indian and New Zealand pitches, he said, “Obviously, in India the pitches are quite flat, so we have to bowl that hard length. But here, there’s that extra bounce. So I was just bowling to my strengths, and it worked.”
The fast bowler, who regularly operates at speeds of around 140-142 kmph, also spoke about the need to combine aggression with control.
“If you’re a fast bowler bowling at an average of 140 or 142 (kmph), you have to be aggressive as well. But you have to know your limits too. I just enjoy it and keep bowling,” he added.
All four of Gurnoor’s wickets in the second ODI came from back-of-length deliveries or bouncers. Explaining his approach, he said, “I just try to bowl that hard length, the lengths where batters try to pull. I don’t want to bowl it very high; I just keep bowling at shoulder level.”
India now lead the five-match series 2-0, with three matches remaining. Chasing a revised target of 135 in 47 overs, India were 113/7 with KL Rahul and Auqib Nabi at the crease when rain interrupted play. India were declared winners by four runs under the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method.
