The extradition of Harry Boxer (Hari Chand Jaat), an alleged shooter associated with the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, from the United States to India could take several months due to legal procedures and possible court challenges, according to CBI sources.
Boxer has been detained by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in California for alleged immigration violations, not in connection with criminal cases registered against him in India, the sources said.
He will first have to face proceedings before a US immigration court. India will subsequently need to submit a formal extradition dossier under the bilateral Extradition Treaty. The dossier is expected to include forensic evidence, FIR details, charge sheets and voice recordings linked to cases registered against him in Rajasthan, Punjab, Delhi and Mumbai.
CBI sources told IANS that extradition proceedings in the US can be lengthy, with the accused having opportunities to challenge them in court. Any application for political asylum could further delay the process.
Since most cases against Boxer are being investigated by state police agencies, documents from different states will have to be consolidated into a single dossier and forwarded to the Ministry of External Affairs through the CBI.
The Delhi Police Special Cell and Mumbai Crime Branch have started submitting case-related documents to central agencies. Officials said Boxer’s extradition would not be possible until the US court grants the necessary approval.
Indian security and intelligence agencies had been tracking his movements, particularly after the firing incident outside Bollywood filmmaker Rohit Shetty’s residence in Mumbai. Boxer, a native of Narayanpur village in Rajasthan, is known by the nickname because of his earlier association with sports and his background as a boxing coach in Jaipur.
He has been absconding since 2022 and is believed to have fled India for the United States, where Indian agencies continued to track his activities.
