Rajat Patidar has been named captain of Madhya Pradesh for the upcoming Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, which begins on November 14. Madhya Pradesh have been placed in Elite Group C, with their first four matches scheduled in New Chandigarh and the remaining three in Mohali.
Patidar may not be available for the entire league phase as he is scheduled to join the India A squad for the Men’s Rising Stars Asia Cup in Doha, Qatar, from November 19 to 29. Left-arm fast-bowling all-rounder Arshad Khan is also expected to join the India A team.
Patidar, who has played three Tests and one ODI for India, has been appointed deputy to India A captain Tilak Varma. In his possible absence, batters Akshat Raghuwanshi, Harsh Gawli and Aniket Verma will have important roles. Seam-bowling all-rounder Madhav Tiwari has again missed out on selection despite featuring for Delhi Capitals in IPL 2026 and Ujjain Falcons in the Madhya Pradesh League T20 Scindia Cup 2026.
The squad includes wicketkeepers Harsh Gawli and Apoorv Dwivedi. India fast bowler Avesh Khan will lead the pace attack, supported by Mangesh Yadav, while the spin options include Kumar Kartikeya Singh, Saransh Jain and Shivang Kumar. Pacer Kuldeep Sen has not been selected as he is currently recovering from an unspecified injury.
Madhya Pradesh will open their campaign against Kerala in a day-night match at New Chandigarh on November 14. They will face Assam on November 16, Tripura on November 18 and Andhra on November 20. Their remaining group fixtures are against Maharashtra on November 22, Himachal Pradesh on November 24 and Puducherry on November 26.
If Patidar leaves after the Assam match, the team management, led by Chandrakant Pandit, will need to appoint a stand-in captain for the remaining fixtures.
