BJP leaders on Saturday criticised Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi over her remarks on the state of democracy and institutions in India, asserting that the country had made significant progress under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership.
In an interview with The Hindu, Sonia Gandhi said, “Over the last twelve years great damage has been done to the fabric of our country, our democracy and our institutions. Even after this government goes it will take time to restore our systems back to health, and great effort from political parties.”
She also said, “People are now beginning to be restless and recognising the damage. But I am optimistic and I know that the people of India will welcome a return to proper governance.”
Reacting to her comments, Union Minister Ramdas Athawale said Sonia Gandhi was entitled to her views but maintained that India was progressing. Speaking to IANS, he cited the country’s global economic position, development across sectors and the ‘Make in India’ initiative, saying exports were also generating employment opportunities.
Union Minister Giriraj Singh questioned Sonia Gandhi’s comments on democracy and accused her of being more concerned about promoting her son, Rahul Gandhi, politically. He said she should focus on the Congress’ failure to return to power in several states for decades and demanded that she apologise to the people of India. Singh also made remarks about her citizenship after her marriage to Rajiv Gandhi.
Madhya Pradesh Minister Vishwas Sarang questioned Sonia Gandhi’s political ambitions, saying her aspiration to become Prime Minister had not been fulfilled. He credited the Modi government with promoting development and welfare.
BJP MP Praveen Khandelwal said Sonia Gandhi was not in a position to lecture others on democracy, accusing the Congress of undermining democratic institutions during the Emergency. He said India had gained a stronger global position under Modi’s leadership over the past 12 years.
Bihar Minister Pramod Kumar Chandravanshi questioned Sonia Gandhi’s understanding of Indian traditions and social systems, while asserting that the BJP had worked to preserve the country’s cultural heritage.
BJP leader Shahnawaz Hussain rejected her criticism, claiming that India had witnessed the rule of law, social harmony and economic progress under the present government. Another BJP leader, Mrityunjay Tiwari, also criticised Sonia Gandhi and said she should take rest, while questioning her hopes of seeing Rahul Gandhi become Prime Minister.
