Indian-American Congressman Ro Khanna has come into focus as a potential contender for the 2028 US presidential race after a group of Democratic supporters launched a “Run Ro” initiative to persuade him to seek the party’s nomination.
Khanna, however, has not announced a presidential bid and has left open the possibility of supporting another candidate. In a statement to NBC News, the California Democrat said he would make the decision with his family after the holidays.
“Whether I run or support someone else is something I will decide with my family after the holidays,” he said, while welcoming the encouragement from supporters.
Former Democratic Congressman Jamaal Bowman and progressive strategist Nomiki Konst are leading the initiative. They told NBC News that the committee would raise funds and build an organisation to support a potential campaign.
Khanna identified universal healthcare through Medicare for All, ending foreign wars and taxing billionaires as priorities. Politico reported that he was not directly involved in the group, underlining that the initiative is an effort by supporters rather than a formal campaign launched by the congressman.
The announcement came two days after the US midterm elections. Khanna has visited states that hold early presidential nomination contests, according to Politico, but has not announced a timeline for a decision.
Konst said the organisers wanted progressive economic policies to shape the Democratic presidential debate from the outset. She also cited Khanna’s positions on artificial intelligence, taxation of wealthy individuals and efforts to secure the release of records related to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Born in Philadelphia in 1976 to an immigrant family, Khanna represents California’s 17th Congressional District, which includes parts of Silicon Valley. He studied economics at the University of Chicago and earned a law degree from Yale University.
He served as a deputy assistant secretary at the Commerce Department during the Obama administration and was a co-chair of Bernie Sanders’ 2020 presidential campaign. Khanna lives in Fremont, California, with his wife, Ritu, and their two children.
The launch of the “Run Ro” initiative puts his name into early discussions about the 2028 Democratic field, but the extent of his support among party voters remains to be seen.
