Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Sunday demanded that the state Congress leadership clarify its position and seek an apology over alleged remarks by Opposition leaders against people from Uttarakhand and National Security Adviser Ajit Doval.
Dhami accused the Congress of putting its political alliance with the Samajwadi Party (SP) ahead of the dignity of Uttarakhand residents, referring to BJP allegations that SP president Akhilesh Yadav had described people from Uttarakhand living in Uttar Pradesh as “infiltrators”.
Addressing the closing ceremony of Khel Mahakumbh 2026, the Chief Minister also criticised the Congress over its political approach, alleging that the party was frustrated after losing power.
He accused the party of having a history of undermining democracy, citing the Emergency and the dismissal of elected governments. He said people had lost trust in the Congress after witnessing its actions over six decades.
Dhami also questioned the Congress’s decision to proceed with a proposed event at Ramlila Maidan despite traders reportedly appealing for its postponement until after Diwali and the festive season.
He alleged that the Opposition was attempting to create disorder and provoke unrest, drawing comparisons with developments in Bangladesh and Nepal. He also invoked former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s remarks about the Congress’s conduct in and out of power.
Targeting the Opposition over the alleged comments against Doval, Dhami said the NSA was “Uttarakhand’s son” and accused Akhilesh Yadav of using the term “infiltrator” for people from the state.
He challenged the Uttarakhand Congress to publicly state whether it endorsed the remarks.
“If you don’t agree with what they said, and respect Uttarakhand and its roots, then you should speak up,” Dhami said.
