Marc Marquez moved closer to securing the 2026 MotoGP world championship with a commanding victory at the Malaysian Grand Prix on Sunday, claiming his seventh win of the season and a third career triumph at Sepang.
With title rival Jorge Martin absent due to injury, the Ducati rider capitalised on the opportunity to strengthen his position in the championship standings. Marquez now holds a 44-point advantage over Martin heading into next weekend’s Qatar Grand Prix.
His lead over teammate Marco Bezzecchi has also widened to 67 points after the Italian finished sixth in Malaysia. Marquez could have his first opportunity to clinch the championship at the Lusail International Circuit, depending on the results in Qatar.
Pedro Acosta of Red Bull KTM Factory Racing finished second for the second consecutive year at Sepang, while polesitter Alex Marquez of BK8 Gresini Racing MotoGP completed the podium in third place.
Ai Ogura secured fourth position after moving past Bezzecchi, while Enea Bastianini finished fifth. Bezzecchi’s hopes of a stronger finish suffered a setback when a last-lap error at Turn 14 allowed Bastianini to overtake him.
Luca Marini finished seventh, narrowly ahead of Fabio Di Giannantonio, with just 0.066 seconds separating the two Italians at the finish. Brad Binder took ninth, while Franco Morbidelli completed the top 10.
Fabio Quartararo, Alex Rins, Francesco Bagnaia, Maverick Viñales and Iker Lecuona took the remaining points-paying positions.
The championship battle now moves to Qatar, where Marquez and Ducati will need to score 30 points more than Martin and eight more than Bezzecchi to secure the title.
