A layer of toxic-looking foam was spotted floating on the Yamuna near Okhla Barrage and Kalindi Kunj in Delhi on Saturday, renewing concerns over river pollution ahead of Chhath Puja, when devotees gather along the riverbanks to offer prayers.
Visuals from the area showed foam spread across the river’s surface, highlighting the persistent challenge of keeping the Yamuna clean despite ongoing efforts by the Delhi government.
Foam formation in the river has frequently been linked to pollutants such as detergents and untreated wastewater discharged into the water. However, the specific cause of the foam observed on Saturday has not been independently established.
The development comes weeks after the Delhi government organised a cleanliness drive under its ‘Chalo Yamuna’ campaign. The initiative involved young people, Resident Welfare Associations, non-governmental organisations and public representatives in voluntary clean-up activities at Yamuna ghats and surrounding areas across all 70 locations in the city.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta led the campaign and urged residents to take collective responsibility for protecting the river by becoming ‘Yamuna Praharis’.
“Cleanliness is not just a campaign but a way of life and ensuring that no waste reaches the Yamuna is our collective responsibility,” she said.
Meanwhile, Delhi’s air quality remained in the ‘poor’ category for the third consecutive day on Saturday, with the Air Quality Index recorded at 180, according to the latest data cited in the report.
Following Dussehra celebrations, smoke and unfavourable weather conditions have contributed to worsening air quality across Delhi-NCR. The Commission for Air Quality Management invoked Stage I of the Graded Response Action Plan earlier this week after pollution levels entered the poor category.
