India is gathering information about an incident involving 14 Indian nationals aboard a yacht off Yemen’s coast and has assured all possible assistance to safeguard their well-being, following claims by Yemen’s Houthi forces that Saudi Arabia targeted the vessel near Zuqar Island in the Red Sea.
The Embassy of India in Yemen said it was examining reports about the incident and working to ascertain further details.
“We are ascertaining further details about the incident and will provide all possible help for ensuring the safety and well-being of the Indian nationals,” the embassy said in a post on X.
Earlier, Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree claimed that Saudi forces had targeted the yacht near Zuqar Island and that Yemeni forces were conducting a rescue operation. He described the information as preliminary and said further details would be released later.
Saree also alleged that the incident threatened international navigation in the Red Sea and called on the international community to intervene. The Saudi allegation and the circumstances surrounding the incident had not been independently established in the information available.
The development comes amid heightened regional tensions following an attack on King Fahd International Airport in Dammam, Saudi Arabia, on October 21. According to the Indian Embassy in Riyadh, an Indian national was among two people killed, while two other Indians were injured.
India on Thursday condemned attacks on civilian and energy infrastructure in Saudi Arabia, including the incident at King Fahd International Airport and an attack on Saudi Aramco’s Shaybah oil field in the Eastern Province.
The Ministry of External Affairs said the attacks had resulted in civilian deaths and injuries and expressed hope that peace and normalcy would return to the region at the earliest.
Meanwhile, the Houthis have accused Saudi forces of conducting air and missile strikes across several Yemeni provinces this week, adding to concerns over regional security and maritime movement through the Red Sea.
