BJP leaders on Tuesday criticised Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut over his social media post referring to reports of the burning of Albania’s Supreme Court, accusing him of encouraging anarchy and demanding an apology from the opposition leader.
In his post on X, Raut claimed that protesters in Albania had set the Supreme Court on fire because it was allegedly helping corrupt prime ministers. He also referred to attacks on Parliament, government offices and ministers’ residences, adding that other countries, particularly India, should learn from the events.
Reacting to the remarks, BJP leader Syed Shahnawaz Hussain questioned the message Raut intended to convey and accused him of threatening constitutional institutions.
“He is saying that lessons should be learned from how the Supreme Court in Albania was set on fire. What message is he trying to convey? Is he trying to threaten the Supreme Court?” Hussain said, demanding that Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray apologise.
BJP leader Guru Prakash Paswan also criticised Raut, questioning whether the events in Albania were being presented as an example for India. He said the country was governed by the Constitution and warned against attempts to create an atmosphere of anarchy. Paswan also referred to a Congress post in Kerala that called for the removal of the Chief Justice of India.
BJP leader Kirit Somaiya accused Raut of targeting constitutional institutions and supporting the burning of Albania’s Supreme Court. He said a contempt petition against Raut was pending before the Supreme Court and asserted that the people of India would not tolerate anarchy.
Congress leader Udit Raj, however, backed Raut’s remarks and linked the controversy to questions over bail decisions in high-profile cases.
“When bail is granted, no reasons are given, and Umar Khalid is denied bail. Bail is the rule, so why is it being denied? Why was it granted to others? There should be a speaking order,” Raj said.
Shiv Sena leader Anand Dubey also criticised any suggestion of India witnessing violence and arson. Invoking Vijayadashami, he said righteousness, justice and truth had historically prevailed over their opposites, adding that India would not descend into chaos like that seen in other countries.
The exchange has triggered a political dispute over Raut’s comments and the implications of invoking unrest abroad in the context of India’s constitutional institutions.
