Actor Somy Ali has dismissed rumours of a romantic relationship between Govinda and Karisma Kapoor, saying she never heard any such gossip during her time in the film industry, despite the duo’s popular on-screen chemistry in the 1990s.
The remarks come amid renewed attention on Govinda’s personal life following allegations by his wife, Sunita Ahuja, about an alleged affair with his co-star Komal Rani.
Somy, who worked with Govinda in the 1995 film Andolan, was asked whether she had witnessed anything on the sets or heard rumours that the actor was romantically involved with Karisma or any other co-star.
“Never with Lolo, never, not even once did I hear a rumour about Chichi having an affair with Lolo. Not once,” she said during a conversation with IANS.
Referring to Karisma, popularly known as Lolo, and Govinda, whom she called Chichi, Somy said she had never heard of an affair between the two despite being part of the film industry at the time.
She also spoke about Karisma’s close friendship with Salman Khan, with whom the actress worked in several films. Somy said the two were very good friends and maintained that there was no affair between them either.
“Salman has done a lot of movies with Lolo. He’s very close to Lolo. They’re very good friends, and I know that there was no affair between Salman and Lolo. There was no affair between Chichi and Lolo,” she said.
Somy added that she did not believe in judging people’s personal relationships, saying that whom someone chose to be with was their own private matter.
Reflecting on her own life during that period, Somy said she was still trying to understand herself and her place in the film industry.
“Lost teenager in the jungle. And I was still trying to figure out who I am and what I am doing here and what is going on,” she said.
