A controversy has erupted in Punjab after a photograph of freedom fighter Shaheed Bhagat Singh allegedly appeared against a voter’s entry in the electoral rolls of Ludhiana East, prompting Congress leaders to demand an impartial investigation into possible discrepancies.
Former Punjab Congress president and MP Amarinder Singh Raja Warring raised the issue on Sunday, questioning how the photograph of the iconic freedom fighter allegedly found its way into the voter list and demanding accountability from the Election Commission.
In a post on social media platform X, Warring remarked, “This was the only thing left to see…!”
He claimed that Bhagat Singh’s photograph had been placed against serial number 422 in the electoral roll for polling booth number 38 in the Ludhiana East Assembly constituency.
Drawing a comparison with similar alleged cases involving photographs in Haryana’s electoral rolls, Warring questioned the credibility of the electoral process and sought answers from the Election Commission on how such errors occurred, who would investigate them and who would be held responsible.
He demanded an impartial inquiry and called for the findings to be made public, stressing that the accuracy of voter lists and the credibility of elections must not be compromised in a democracy.
Congress Seeks Review of Ludhiana East Electoral Rolls
Earlier, Congress leader and former Ludhiana East MLA Sanjay Talwar had also raised concerns over the alleged discrepancies. He demanded a review of electoral rolls across all 235 polling booths in the Assembly constituency.
According to Talwar, apart from the entry at serial number 422 at booth number 38, eight other entries allegedly carried incorrect photographs.
Ludhiana Deputy Commissioner Himanshu Jain said he would obtain details from the concerned Electoral Registration Officer and examine the matter.
The reason for the alleged incorrect photograph and the extent of the discrepancies will be established only after an official inquiry.
Meanwhile, Congress leaders have urged the Election Commission to ensure transparency and maintain the accuracy of electoral rolls, saying that any irregularities must be investigated and those responsible held accountable.
