A 48-year-old man died following an alleged assault during a dispute over a seat reserved for senior citizens aboard a Delhi Metro train, prompting police to arrest a former IAS officer and his son, officials said.
The incident took place on October 8 at the Supreme Court Metro station. The deceased, identified as Pawan Sharma, allegedly got into an argument with Sanjay Pratap Singh, a former Indian Administrative Service officer, and his son, Sidharth Singh, a lawyer practising at the Supreme Court, according to the FIR.
The dispute reportedly began over a seat reserved for senior citizens. During the altercation, Sharma was allegedly slapped and pushed, causing him to fall and sustain head injuries.
Metro staff arranged an ambulance to take Sharma to Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival, the FIR stated.
The case was registered on October 9 following a complaint by Sharma’s mother, Durga Sharma. Police invoked Sections 105 and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), relating to culpable homicide not amounting to murder and common intention, respectively.
Police sources said both accused were arrested in connection with the case. Sanjay Pratap Singh had previously been arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation in an alleged bribery case, according to the sources.
A Delhi Metro Rail Corporation official said both individuals were removed from the train after the incident came to light.
“As soon as the incident was reported, both were deboarded. The injured one was sent immediately to the hospital, whereas the other one was handed over to the police,” the official said.
Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the confrontation and Sharma’s death. Officials have not disclosed further details of the medical findings or the precise nature of his injuries.
