Phagwara, October 12, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)
A 21-year-old student of Lovely Professional University (LPU) was found dead in a private paying guest (PG) accommodation near the university’s Law Gate area in Maheru village, Phagwara, during the intervening night of October 10 and 11.
The deceased has been identified as Abhishek Patel, son of Siyaram Patel, a resident of Chandapur village in Varanasi district of Uttar Pradesh. He was a fourth-year Computer Science student at LPU.
According to police, Abhishek was found hanging from a ceiling fan in his PG room. He had reportedly shifted to the accommodation around 10 days earlier after leaving the university hostel.
The incident came to light after his friends and the PG owner alerted the authorities. Personnel from Satnampura Police Station reached the spot and initiated an investigation.
Police took custody of the body and arranged for a post-mortem examination at the Civil Hospital. The student’s family was also informed.
Police Find Writing on Room Walls
During the examination of the room, investigators found a message written on the walls, which police are treating as a purported suicide note.
The writing contained apologies to the student’s parents and referred to feelings of pressure and depression. It read: “Sorry Mummy Papa. If I take next birth, I will be your good son. World’s best Mummy Papa. I’m taking rest from ‘nafrat ki duniya’. Sorry to all. I felt to hands this pressure and depression.”
Police have not established whether any particular person or incident contributed to the student’s reported emotional distress.
Investigators are also examining the student’s mobile phone as part of efforts to establish the circumstances preceding his death.
SSP Says Suicide Prima Facie Established
Kapurthala Senior Superintendent of Police Gaurav Toora said the preliminary investigation indicated death by suicide.
He said detailed videography of the scene had been conducted and forensic examination of the student’s phone was underway.
According to the SSP, the student’s parents had not lodged any formal complaint against anyone.
He further stated that the body was handed over to the family following the post-mortem examination and that the parents had returned to Varanasi.
Proceedings have been initiated at Satnampura Police Station under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), which deals with police inquiries into certain categories of deaths.
The police investigation remains ongoing, and no evidence of foul play has been established so far.
Incident Follows Recent Protests at LPU
The death comes days after LPU witnessed protests following rumours and allegations concerning an alleged rape incident.
However, police have described Abhishek Patel’s death as an independent case, and no connection between the two developments has been established.
The circumstances surrounding the student’s death remain under investigation.
