Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) Secretary Balwinder Singh Kahalwa has expressed concern over the incident reported at the historic Gurdwara Sri Bangla Sahib in Delhi, stressing that the sanctity, traditions and religious sentiments associated with Sikh shrines must be respected at all times.
Kah l awa said gurdwaras are sacred places in Sikhism and centres of spiritual peace, service and devotion for all humanity. He emphasised that respecting their religious discipline, traditions and Sikh sentiments is the responsibility of everyone.
Referring to reports that people entered Gurdwara Sri Bangla Sahib with their heads uncovered and wearing shoes, the SGPC secretary said such conduct is contrary to Sikh maryada. He added that if this occurred during the reported incident, the local gurdwara management should clarify the circumstances and explain what steps were taken to ensure adherence to religious protocol.
He said gurdwaras welcome everyone, irrespective of religion, caste or social background, and treat all visitors with equal respect. Their foundational message is rooted in the welfare of all, mutual harmony and service to humanity.
Kah l awa maintained that creating a tense atmosphere inside a gurdwara over any issue, or undertaking actions that affect religious discipline, is inappropriate. He stressed that the sanctity and maryada of religious places must be kept above all disputes.
The SGPC secretary also expressed concern about the discussion and circulation of such incidents on social media, saying that it can affect the religious sentiments of the sangat. He called for efforts at every level to ensure that the sanctity, dignity and religious traditions of gurdwaras are never compromised.
