India is poised to emerge as a global hub for automobile manufacturing as international carmakers increasingly look to expand production in the country, Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said on Monday.
Addressing the Dilli Dialogue: Policies for a Future-Ready India in New Delhi, Goyal said rising domestic demand, an expanding manufacturing ecosystem and the country’s ambition to become a developed nation by 2047 under the Viksit Bharat vision would strengthen India’s position as a key global production base for the automobile industry.
“We want to be a part of the global marketplace. Providing opportunities for people, providing opportunities for jobs, for our startups, for our youth to come up with newer ideas,” Goyal said.
The minister said India was following a two-pronged strategy of integrating with the world’s best technologies while identifying sectors with strong potential to generate employment and drive business growth.
Highlighting the country’s trade policy, Goyal said India was expanding its access to international markets through free trade agreements (FTAs). These agreements, he noted, create opportunities for Indian businesses in sectors such as textiles, footwear, agriculture and food processing, while facilitating access to advanced technologies and high-quality products from developed economies.
Emphasising India’s approach to globalisation, Goyal said the country was not isolating itself from the world but opening its doors wider to international partnerships and investments.
He also expressed confidence that India could achieve its ambitious target of one trillion dollars in exports as it works towards becoming a developed nation by 2047.
According to Goyal, a detailed roadmap has been prepared to identify the sectors expected to drive the country’s growth over the coming decades.
Pointing to India’s population of 1.4 billion, the minister said the growing demand for goods and services offered substantial opportunities for domestic manufacturers as well as global investors.
He said rising demand for electronics and white goods could spur further investment in domestic manufacturing and semiconductor facilities.
On the automobile industry, Goyal said global manufacturers would increasingly consider India a production base as domestic market demand reaches the scale required to support greater manufacturing activity.
