Former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Attar Singh Bhedana died at Jaipur’s Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Hospital late Sunday night after allegedly being attacked by a group of villagers during a long-running dispute over a crusher mining lease in Rajasthan’s Bharatpur district.
The incident took place between 6.30 pm and 7 pm at the crusher site in Bhaunda village, falling under the Weir police station area. According to preliminary information, around 70–80 people allegedly attacked Bhedana and his associate, Gagan Sharma, a resident of Nadbai, with sticks and stones. Both sustained serious injuries and were taken to Weir Hospital for initial treatment.
Bhedana was subsequently referred to SMS Hospital in Jaipur, where he died at around 11.30 pm. Sharma was referred to Bharatpur for further treatment. Jitendra Kumar, Station House Officer of the SMS police station, confirmed Bhedana’s death. His body was kept in the hospital mortuary.
Bhedana’s wife, Kamlesh, alleged that the police and administration had repeatedly been informed about problems at the crusher site but had failed to act. She said the electricity connection to the mining lease had been disconnected and the water pump damaged. She also alleged that visitors to the site were frequently driven away.
Kamlesh claimed that her husband had sustained a gunshot wound. However, doctors at Weir Sub-District Hospital said they had prima facie ruled out the possibility of a firearm injury.
Police said the dispute between villagers and the crusher operator had continued for around four years. Villagers have accused Bhedana of encroaching on grazing land and undertaking illegal mining. A separate dispute over the access road to the lease area has also been reported.
According to police, villagers had staged intermittent protests over the past two years. The crusher plant had reportedly remained closed for about a year, and Bhedana was attempting to resume operations when Sunday’s confrontation occurred.
Villagers, however, claimed that a peaceful protest had been underway for 10–15 days. They alleged that 40–50 people associated with Bhedana arrived at the site and forcibly removed protesters, triggering a clash. Both sides allegedly used sticks and stones as the confrontation escalated.
Station House Officer Dhirendra Singh said neither side had filed a formal police complaint at the time of his statement. Additional police personnel were deployed from Bharatpur, while officials gathered information about reports of firing and assessed the number of injured.
Dr Ravi of Weir Sub-District Hospital said the injured were brought to the facility at around 8.15 pm before Bhedana and Sharma were referred to other hospitals. The circumstances surrounding the fatal clash remain under investigation.
