An IndiGo flight travelling from Delhi to Chennai was diverted to Hyderabad on Sunday after smoke was detected from a passenger’s personal electronic device, reportedly a malfunctioning power bank that caught fire inside the aircraft.
All passengers and crew members were reported safe after the aircraft landed at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad. The cabin crew used fire extinguishers to bring the situation under control.
In a statement, IndiGo confirmed that flight 6E 6115, operating from Delhi to Chennai on October 11, had been diverted following the incident.
“The cabin crew responded promptly and the situation was brought under control. In line with established protocols, the pilots diverted the flight and landed safely at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, Hyderabad,” the airline said.
IndiGo added that an alternative aircraft had been arranged to take passengers to Chennai, their intended destination.
“We regret the inconvenience caused to our customers due to this unforeseen situation and are making all efforts to minimise it, including offering refreshments and sharing timely updates,” the airline said, reiterating that passenger and crew safety remained its top priority.
According to the available details, the Airbus A321-251N aircraft departed from Delhi at approximately 1.30 pm, against its scheduled departure time of 1.10 pm. It was due to arrive in Chennai at 4 pm.
The fire reportedly broke out in an overhead luggage compartment, triggering panic among passengers. A video recorded by a passenger on a mobile phone subsequently emerged, showing people attempting to tackle the flames using their bags before the cabin crew intervened with fire extinguishers.
The exact time and location of the incident onboard had not been independently confirmed in the information available.
The diversion ensured that the aircraft landed safely in Hyderabad while arrangements were made to resume the journey to Chennai.
