Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convener Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday accused the Narendra Modi-led government of excessive police action against protesters ahead of a demonstration at Jantar Mantar on Saturday, alleging that young people, lawyers and journalists had been targeted.
In a video message shared on social media, Kejriwal claimed that the police action could fuel demands for the resignation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. He also compared the crackdown to the repression associated with Adolf Hitler, alleging that the government had crossed all limits.
“On Saturday, PM Modi crossed all limits of repression, surpassing even Hitler. Videos showing the police’s atrocities are circulating everywhere. Young girls are being harassed and mistreated. Lawyers and journalists have not been spared either. The crackdown must not end up forcing PM Modi to resign alongside Gyanesh Kumar,” Kejriwal said.
The AAP leader alleged that lawyers were also subjected to mistreatment during the police action. He claimed that a senior Supreme Court lawyer had been dragged along the road, while other lawyers were assaulted, detained and mistreated.
Kejriwal said such treatment of members of the legal profession was unprecedented and warned that governments resorting to such actions had faced political consequences.
He further accused the government of creating an Emergency-like atmosphere in the country, alleging that media organisations and journalists were also facing pressure.
Referring to the reported arrest of Atul Agrawal, Editor-in-Chief of the Hindi Khabar and Living India group, Kejriwal said the action had raised concerns about press freedom. He alleged that Haryana Police had arrested Agrawal after his channel reported on the spread of drug-related activities in Haryana.
Calling the alleged actions shameful, Kejriwal accused the Modi government of undermining democratic institutions and freedoms.
The allegations regarding police conduct, the treatment of lawyers and the circumstances surrounding Agrawal’s arrest were made by Kejriwal in his video statement.
