Filmmaker Nikkhil Advani has said he deliberately portrayed legendary freedom fighter Bagha Jatin as a highly emotional person who speaks in an almost monotone voice in the recently released streaming series The Revolutionaries.
Advani, who has received a positive response to his work on the show, shared his approach during a promotional interaction with IANS in Mumbai. He was joined by the series’ cast members Bhuvan Bam, Rohit Saraf, Pratibha Ranta and Gurfateh Pirzada at an event in Andheri West.
Gurfateh Pirzada portrays Bagha Jatin in the series. Explaining his decision to shape the character around the actor’s personality, Advani said he was drawn to the silence and emotional depth he observed in Pirzada.
“I feel that there is so much silence in Gurfateh, and I have played him like that. I have played Bagha Jatin as this guy who is almost monotone. When he speaks, he is very clear that this is what we need to do. And he is very emotional, highly emotional. I showcased him as highly emotional,” Advani told IANS.
The filmmaker added that the character’s portrayal was influenced by the energy he sensed while working with the people around him, as well as elements already present in the script.
The Revolutionaries follows four freedom fighters—Rash Behari Bose, Pratibha Lahiri, Sachindra Nath Sanyal and Bagha Jatin—who challenged British rule in India. Inspired by true events, the series is set against the backdrop of the country’s freedom struggle and explores the revolutionaries’ belief that armed resistance was essential to ending colonial rule.
The show also features Bhuvan Bam, Rohit Saraf, Pratibha Ranta and Jason Shah in key roles. It highlights the efforts of revolutionary figures whose activities contributed to the British Empire’s decision to shift its capital from Kolkata to Delhi.
