In a daytime attack, a group of miscreants allegedly opened fire on an Odisha Police team in Madhya Pradesh’s Sidhi district on Tuesday, assaulted the officers and freed an accused in a Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act case from custody.
The incident took place in the Chhuhiya Valley, within the Rampur Naikin police station limits near the Rewa-Sidhi border, when the eight-member Odisha Police team was escorting the accused, identified as Aditya Mishra, from Odisha to the Rewa district court for production.
Sidhi Superintendent of Police Santosh Kori said the police personnel were armed at the time of the attack.
According to Additional Superintendent of Police Kamla Joshi, the local police received a call from the Odisha team at around 11.25 a.m. as the police vehicle was passing through the valley. Three to four vehicles carrying the attackers allegedly surrounded the police vehicle, with two blocking its path from the front and another from behind.
The attackers reportedly fired two to three rounds and assaulted the officers with baseball bats and sticks. They also smashed the windows of the police vehicle. Reports further indicated that a bullet punctured one of its tyres and that the attackers may have used chilli spray to disorient the officers.
The miscreants then allegedly freed Mishra, forced him into one of their vehicles and fled the scene. They were reportedly heading towards Maihar.
No Odisha Police personnel were reported injured in the attack, despite the firing and assault.
SP Kori confirmed that the Odisha Police team contacted emergency services following the incident. Police personnel from Sidhi and nearby stations were immediately alerted and rushed to the spot.
A large-scale search operation has been launched to trace the escaped accused and identify those involved in the attack. Police have intensified vehicle checks and increased security in the Chhuhiya Valley and adjoining areas, with authorities placing the region on high alert.
Investigators are examining CCTV footage from the route and questioning local residents to gather information about the attackers and their possible escape route.
Sidhi Police are coordinating with their Odisha counterparts as the joint investigation continues to track down Mishra and those who allegedly facilitated his escape.
