The Congress on Saturday reiterated Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi’s earlier allegations of “vote chori” after three NDA allies sought clarification from the Election Commission of India (ECI) over reports of differences within the poll panel concerning the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Union Minister and LJP (Ram Vilas) president Chirag Paswan, Rashtriya Lok Morcha chief Upendra Kushwaha and TDP Lok Sabha floor leader Lavu Srikrishna Devarayalu on Friday called on the ECI to address public concerns and provide greater clarity on the issue. Paswan said the poll panel should dispel doubts among citizens, while Kushwaha called for an immediate clarification. The TDP also said transparency would help strengthen public confidence in the electoral process.
Reacting to the developments, Congress MP Sukhdeo Bhagat said the party’s earlier concerns were now being reflected in questions raised by NDA allies.
“Our leader Rahul Gandhi has been constantly speaking over the issue and has even presented facts. Today, those allegations are coming out to be true,” Bhagat told IANS.
Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee Vice-President V. Gurunadham said Gandhi had been among the first to raise questions over the SIR process and the ECI. He also criticised Paswan’s position on allegations made by Opposition leaders.
Congress leader Supriya Shrinate alleged that the right to vote was under threat and said the Election Commission had been questioned over the electoral process. Her remarks were part of the Congress’ political criticism of the poll panel and were not an established finding.
Meanwhile, AAP MP Sanjay Singh attributed the NDA allies’ demands for clarification to concerns about their political position within the alliance. His comments were similarly presented as a political interpretation.
The controversy follows reports that Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had raised objections on several occasions over decisions relating to electoral-roll processes. The ECI has said that differences of opinion are a normal part of deliberations in a multi-member institution and maintained that its final decisions, including those concerning the SIR, were unanimous.
The NDA allies have said their calls for clarification are aimed at addressing public doubts and maintaining confidence in the electoral system, rather than endorsing the Opposition’s allegations against the poll panel.
