Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has raised concerns over women’s safety in Delhi following the alleged gang rape and murder of a 17-year-old girl, questioning accountability for crimes against women in the national Capital.
In a post on X on Saturday, Priyanka Gandhi said the incident reflected serious concerns about women’s safety and criticised what she described as a lack of concrete action against perpetrators of crimes against women.
“Both society and the government have completely failed in granting women their rights to safety, freedom, and equality,” she said.
Her remarks came a day after Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi also raised the issue, questioning the responsibility of authorities for ensuring women’s safety in Delhi.
Rahul Gandhi said the teenager was allegedly gang-raped and murdered and that her body was later dumped in an open field. He questioned the Delhi Police’s response and called for the immediate arrest of those responsible, strict punishment and accountability.
The police have arrested four persons in connection with the case, including three juveniles aged 16 and 17. The adult accused has been identified as Shivam, alias Sudama, alias Chuchu, a resident of Khadda Colony.
According to police, the girl was acquainted with the accused and had travelled with them in a tempo. Investigators allege that the group consumed alcohol during the journey, after which the girl was sexually assaulted and subsequently stabbed to death. Her body was allegedly abandoned in an open area.
The case came to light on September 13, when police recovered the severely decomposed body near Jaipal Rana’s field along Kushak Road in North Delhi’s Swaroop Nagar area. Police said the condition of the body was so advanced that the victim’s gender could not initially be established.
Investigators said parts of the body had been eaten by stray dogs, and one of the victim’s hands was found detached.
Police said the girl’s family had not filed a missing-person complaint, telling investigators that she would sometimes leave home and return after several days.
A case has been registered under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
With no apparent eyewitnesses and the suspects initially unidentified, police examined CCTV footage from the area. More than 50 cameras along the suspected crime scene and adjoining routes were analysed. Investigators noticed a tempo in the area around the relevant time, although its registration number could not initially be read because of darkness and poor visibility.
Police subsequently tracked the vehicle through footage from multiple locations and conducted an overnight operation between September 15 and 16, eventually tracing the tempo and questioning its driver.
According to police, two knives allegedly used in the crime, clothes purportedly worn by the accused and the tempo have been recovered.
