Punjab Police has launched a comprehensive awareness and empowerment campaign for adolescent girls aged 12 to 18 years, focusing on health, safety, education and overall development, with targeted interventions planned in areas identified as particularly vulnerable.
A coordination meeting chaired by Special DGP, Community Affairs Division (CAD), Gurpreet Kaur Deo, was held at Ludhiana Police Lines as a precursor to the inter-departmental and inter-agency programme.
The meeting brought together representatives from administrative, medical, educational and social-sector organisations to develop actionable outreach modules. Particular attention was given to pockets with lower socio-economic conditions and areas considered more vulnerable to crimes against young girls.
Gurpreet Kaur Deo said the campaign would follow an integrated approach aimed at helping girls become informed, confident and resilient and enabling them to make safe decisions and contribute positively to society.
The proposed interventions will cover physical and mental health, nutrition, menstrual hygiene, legal and safety awareness, digital and financial literacy, emotional resilience, leadership, career guidance, communication skills and access to welfare schemes.
The initiative will extend beyond schools and colleges to include school drop-outs, girls from economically weaker and migrant families, girls with disabilities and those vulnerable to child labour or early marriage.
The outreach programme will include health check-ups, vocational training, interactive flyers, nukkad nataks (street plays) and targeted short videos and social media campaigns in Punjabi, Hindi and English.
Schools, colleges, parents, teachers, NGOs and community leaders will be involved to strengthen participation and ensure grassroots outreach across the district.
Those attending the coordination meeting included Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Investigation-cum-District Community Policing Officer), Ludhiana, Rupinder Bhatti; Civil Surgeon Dr Ramandeep Kaur; Head of the Department of Community Medicine, DMC Ludhiana, Dr Anurag Chaudhary; District Child Protection Officer Rashmi; Principal, Education Department, Amandeep Singh; Jasmine Pahwa of the Do Good Foundation; and researchers from IDRF, Chandigarh.
