India leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi has highlighted the rapid evolution of T20 cricket, saying a score of 170, once regarded as a winning total, is now only an average or even below-par score in the modern game.
Bishnoi featured in India’s second T20I against Afghanistan after wrist-spinner Varun Chakaravarthy was ruled out of the ongoing series with a side strain. India won the match by seven wickets, with Bishnoi returning figures of 1-32 in his four overs and dismissing Afghanistan opener Sediqullah Atal.
Reflecting on his performance and the changing demands of the shortest format, the 25-year-old spinner said executing the work done during training is particularly important when playing on flat pitches and at smaller grounds.
“It was a really good match. One important thing was that I was able to put into practice the things I had been working on during training. Being able to contribute to the team’s win made it even better,” Bishnoi said in a conversation with the broadcasters ahead of the third T20I at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Thursday.
Bishnoi pointed to the dramatic rise in scoring rates over the past few years, saying the benchmark for a competitive total has changed significantly.
“T20 cricket has changed a lot. From 2022 to 2026, things have changed massively. Back then, 170 was considered a minimum score. Today, 170 is barely a competitive total. What was once a winning score has now become an average or below-par score,” he said.
Asked about bowling in challenging conditions, particularly on batting-friendly surfaces and small grounds, the Jodhpur-born spinner said control and confidence in one’s strengths remain central to his approach.
“My philosophy is to do what you know best and keep improving at it. You have to stick to your process and your plans,” Bishnoi said.
“Playing on good pitches and small grounds is certainly a factor, but you also have to focus on your bowling, how much control you have, and whether you can execute the things you’ve been working on in practice,” he added.
Bishnoi represents Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
