The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) on Thursday announced the launch of ‘OneTag’, a FASTag portability service that allows users to change their issuing bank while continuing to use the existing FASTag affixed to their vehicle.
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways said the facility, now available through the Rajmargyatra app, eliminates the need for users to obtain a new physical FASTag when switching issuers.
FASTag has a penetration rate of more than 98 per cent and around 13 crore users, significantly transforming electronic toll collection across the country. The ministry said the OneTag initiative would provide users with greater flexibility and convenience while further strengthening the digital tolling system.
To use the service, FASTag users can log in to the Rajmargyatra app and enter their vehicle registration number to check eligibility.
Eligible users will receive a six-digit Mobile Verification Code (MVC) from their current issuer bank. After authorisation, they can select a new issuer, complete customer verification and undertake wallet onboarding with the new issuer to complete the portability process.
Once the portability process is successfully completed, the existing FASTag ID linked to the vehicle registration number will remain unchanged. This will allow the user to continue using the same physical FASTag with the new issuer bank.
The previous issuer will close the existing FASTag wallet after the transfer and refund the available balance after making applicable adjustments.
The ministry said an interoperable FASTag will have a cooling-off period of six months before it can be ported again.
According to NHAI, OneTag is also expected to improve FASTag lifecycle management by reducing the need for repeated production of physical tags and lowering operational, dispatch and reissuance costs.
The initiative will additionally streamline the process of switching issuers, expand customer choice and contribute to a more interoperable and efficient FASTag ecosystem.
