Aazad Samaj Party (ASP) chief and Nagina MP Chandrashekhar Aazad on Thursday announced that the party will stage a one-day protest at Jantar Mantar on September 24 over the issue of reservation.
Speaking to reporters in the national capital, Aazad said the protest would seek the government’s attention to the pending issue of reservation in promotions for Scheduled Castes (SCs), Scheduled Tribes (STs) and Other Backward Classes (OBCs).
“There is a protest at Jantar Mantar on the 24th. We will see whether the government discusses the issue with us in the same way and takes appropriate action, like it was discussing it with those opposing reservation. This is because the issue of reservation in promotions for SCs, STs, and OBCs has been pending since 2012,” he said.
Aazad also spoke about the recent incident involving his convoy in Uttar Pradesh’s Barabanki while he was travelling to meet the family of Vinod Kumar Sahani, a trader from the Nishad community who was allegedly killed following a social media dispute.
Describing the incident as a “conspiracy”, Aazad alleged that there had been an attempt to harm him and said members of his team had received threats, including warnings that their vehicles would be set on fire.
He had earlier accused the Barabanki police of failing to prevent the incident and alleged that the confrontation took place in the presence of police personnel.
Aazad said his immediate demand was for a second complaint to be registered and for action against officials named in it. He sought suspension of the concerned officials, alleging that their continued presence in their positions could allow them to misuse their authority.
He also demanded preservation of video footage of the incident, saying it would help the judiciary take cognisance of the alleged offences.
“We are currently trying to proceed only through constitutional means. We have achieved some progress, such as our FIR being registered, in which the names of the concerned officials, including the woman SI, Inspector and ACP, have been mentioned,” Aazad said.
At the same time, he defended the police force as a whole, saying that while some personnel could be at fault, it would be inappropriate to blame the entire police force.
“I agree that they have delayed taking action but our police are our pride. Some police personnel may be at fault, but not all of them can be blamed. If that were the case, it would create distrust,” he said.
Aazad also said an FIR concerning the alleged attack on his convoy had been registered on Thursday. He alleged that photographs of Dr B.R. Ambedkar displayed on vehicles and placards were torn down and trampled, and that party workers were assaulted.
The Barabanki police have registered an FIR in connection with the stone-pelting incident involving Aazad’s convoy and initiated an investigation. Three people, including Amit Singh, have been named in the case along with unidentified persons.
The allegations regarding the attack and the conduct of police officials remain subject to investigation.
