The Kerala High Court on Thursday granted anticipatory bail to a judicial officer whose minor son was allegedly driving a Mercedes-Benz that knocked down and killed a 55-year-old roadside eatery owner last month.
The victim was returning home in the early hours after closing his small eatery when the speeding luxury car hit him. The incident triggered widespread concern over how a minor allegedly came to be driving a high-end vehicle.
While granting anticipatory bail, the High Court took note of the judicial officer’s cooperation with the investigation. The court observed that he had appeared before the investigating officers, answered their questions and had already been questioned for nearly six hours.
The case has drawn considerable public attention because the minor allegedly involved in the incident is the son of a serving judicial officer. The deceased’s family has been demanding strict action and seeking justice.
In a related development, proceedings seeking cancellation of the bail granted to the minor son are underway before another court, with the final order expected shortly.
The anticipatory bail granted to the judicial officer is separate from the proceedings concerning his minor son’s bail. The deceased’s family continues to seek a thorough investigation and action against those found responsible under the law.
