India women’s head coach Amol Muzumdar said he wants his team to carry the confidence and strong belief that powered them to their maiden 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup title into the inaugural ICC Women’s Champions Trophy in 2027.
The six-team tournament is scheduled to be held from February 14 to 28, 2027, with Vadodara and Mumbai’s Brabourne Stadium hosting the matches. The competition will begin a week after the Women’s Premier League (WPL) final at the Brabourne Stadium on February 7.
Reflecting on the World Cup-winning campaign, Muzumdar said the team’s talent, preparation, collective effort and belief had played crucial roles in the historic triumph.
“Apart from these three, the fourth one I would like to add is the strong belief we had in that competition that culminated in winning the World Cup. I think I would like to take that into 2027,” Muzumdar told JioStar.
He also recalled the uncertainty he faced before addressing the players in the team huddle ahead of the World Cup final against South Africa at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai.
India went on to win the rain-affected final by 52 runs, lifting the Women’s ODI World Cup for the first time.
Muzumdar said he had not prepared a speech for the occasion as the rainy conditions and preparations at the ground had kept him occupied.
“Generally, I know what I’m going to speak. Even in team meetings, sometimes, I know exactly what I’m going to say. That day, I had no clue what I was going to say because it was so busy in the morning,” he said.
Recalling how the moment unfolded, he said trainer Harsha reminded him that it was time for the team huddle. Muzumdar then decided to speak from the heart after looking at the crowd.
“Then I just looked at the crowd and said, ‘Let me speak what I feel like at that moment,’” he recalled.
The coach now hopes the belief and collective spirit that helped India win the World Cup will guide the team to another successful campaign in the inaugural Champions Trophy on home soil.
