Actress Vidya Malavade has recalled how her house help, who had been working with her for 15 years, became a victim of cybercrime, an experience that made her latest microdrama, ‘Scam 2024 – The Digital Arrest Story’, particularly relatable.
In an exclusive conversation with IANS, Vidya said the incident took place around one-and-a-half to two years ago, when her house help returned from an ATM unable to withdraw money despite having a balance in her bank account.
” My house help, who has been working with me for 15 years, was the victim. This happened around a year and a half to two years ago. One day, she went to an ATM and returned home saying that she could not withdraw any money, even though she had money in her bank account. She had also brought her passbook,” Vidya said.
Initially, they thought she might have forgotten something or that there was an issue with her ATM card. However, after checking the passbook, Vidya discovered that the entire account balance had been withdrawn in two transactions.
The actress said her house help was unaware of the fraud because the transactions had taken place 10 to 15 days earlier. She also suggested that the bank’s messages might have gone unnoticed.
“She may have overlooked the bank’s messages. By the time we discovered it, her entire account was empty. It was a shocking experience,” she added.
Speaking about ‘Scam 2024 – The Digital Arrest Story’, Vidya said the relevance of the subject and the writing of her character, Priya, convinced her to take up the project.
“I felt the story was extremely relevant, and my character, Priya, was very well written. We hear about people getting scammed almost every day, so this is truly the need of the hour. Something similar has happened in my own home, which made the subject even more relatable to me,” she said.
The drama also features Sandeep Aurora as Anand, along with Priyanshi Tripathi, Puja Jha, Ayushi Tyagi, Shital Tejwani, Ashok K. Jha and Yogesh Pawar in pivotal roles.
