A 30-year-old Venezuelan national has been arrested near the White House after US Secret Service agents found an AR-15 rifle, two handguns and ammunition inside a stolen pickup truck. The suspect allegedly told authorities that voices in his head had instructed him to kill US President Donald Trump.
The arrest took place shortly before midnight on Thursday when a Secret Service officer on routine patrol spotted a suspicious blue Ford F-150 parked on Constitution Avenue.
According to a criminal complaint filed in the DC Superior Court, the officer approached the vehicle and asked the man inside whether he was safe and carrying any weapons. The suspect, identified as Ronny Yordrix Guanipa Chrinos, reportedly nodded when asked about weapons and made a finger-gun gesture.
He later stepped out of the vehicle and communicated with investigators through Google Translate.
During questioning, Guanipa Chrinos allegedly claimed that someone had tried to kill him with a gun and that he had taken the weapon away from that person. He also directed officers to a brown bag inside the vehicle.
A subsequent search uncovered an AR-15 rifle, two handguns and ammunition. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said the suspect allegedly told officers that voices had instructed him to kill President Trump.
Guanipa Chrinos appeared before the DC Superior Court on Friday and remains in custody without bond, according to online court records.
DHS identified him as an undocumented immigrant from Venezuela who entered the United States through Texas in March 2024. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has lodged an immigration detainer against him.
The incident has renewed attention on security around the US President and the White House, which remains under heightened protection.
In a separate incident in April this year, US authorities charged Cole Tomas Allen with attempting to assassinate Trump during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. Prosecutors alleged that the incident could have resulted in a major attack but was prevented by law enforcement.
Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche credited the response of law enforcement personnel, saying their courage and professionalism had ensured the safety of the President and other attendees.
Allen faces federal charges of attempted assassination of the President, interstate transportation of a firearm to commit a felony, and discharge of a firearm during a crime of violence.
