Filmmaker Karan Johar has admitted that he is almost trying to dissuade his children from entering Bollywood, saying he worries that he may be too old to protect them by the time they are ready to join the film industry.
Johar shared his concerns during a conversation about parenting and the pressures of show business on an episode of Koffee With Karan featuring actors Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor.
Acknowledging that the film industry can be a difficult environment, Johar said he was conscious of the challenges his children could face if they chose to follow in his footsteps.
“I am almost dissuading my children from the business. And everybody says, ‘Why are you doing that?’ I am like, look, I will be too old to protect them at that time,” he said.
Kareena offered a different perspective, suggesting that excessive parental protectiveness could sometimes become an obstacle for children.
She said parents might need to allow their children to face challenges independently, recalling how earlier generations often encouraged youngsters to pursue their ambitions and learn through experience.
Johar agreed with her observation as the conversation moved forward.
The filmmaker is a single parent to twins, son Yash and daughter Roohi, whom he welcomed through surrogacy in February 2017.
Yash was named after Johar’s late father, veteran producer Yash Johar, while Roohi’s name is an anagram of his mother Hiroo Johar’s name.
Karan Johar, who heads Dharma Productions, is among Hindi cinema’s prominent filmmakers and producers. His remarks reflect his concerns about the pressures of the same industry in which he has built his career.
