Union Minister Nitin Gadkari on Wednesday announced that Toyota will launch a 100 per cent bioethanol-powered version of its Innova vehicle on November 26, offering an effective fuel cost equivalent to Rs 25-30 per litre of petrol.
Speaking at the ‘Powering the Next Mile’ conclave, Gadkari said the vehicle would run entirely on bioethanol instead of petrol and generate nearly 60 per cent of its power through electricity while driving.
He said ethanol currently costs around Rs 75 per litre, compared with petrol at approximately Rs 120 per litre. The vehicle’s electric power generation would bring its effective operating cost down to the equivalent of Rs 25-30 per litre of petrol, resulting in significant savings for consumers.
Gadkari said electric and alternative-fuel vehicles represented green, safe and inclusive technologies that could benefit consumers and reduce the country’s dependence on conventional fuels.
Highlighting the growth of India’s electric mobility sector, he recalled launching the first electric two-wheelers manufactured by Bajaj and TVS, which initially offered a range of around 125 km.
He added that some startups later reduced battery capacity to bring down prices, enabling electric scooters to be sold for around Rs 70,000-72,000, although their range dropped to approximately 70 km.
