Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday called NCP(SP) president Sharad Pawar to enquire about his health, triggering political speculation in Maharashtra.
Pawar’s family friend and close associate, Vitthal Maniyar, confirmed the call, saying the Prime Minister urged the veteran leader to prioritise his health and take rest.
According to Maniyar, Modi told Pawar, “Supriya and we will handle the country. You take care of your health and rest. Let your blessings remain with us.”
Pawar thanked the Prime Minister and reassured him that he was resting. He reportedly replied, “With all of you around, I have no worries about the country.”
The exchange fuelled discussion over political equations in Maharashtra, although Pawar’s close aides described it as a courtesy call concerning his health.
Maniyar said Pawar’s condition was stable and that there were no serious complications. He had been admitted to Pune’s Ruby Hall Clinic following cough, chest congestion and fatigue and was discharged after routine medical checks and treatment.
Pawar has since moved to his Silver Oak residence in Mumbai, where doctors have advised him to rest for at least two to four days, restrict travel and follow a strict dietary routine before resuming public engagements.
His daughter and Lok Sabha MP Supriya Sule accompanied him to Mumbai. In a social media post, she said, “Baba is much better and we are now driving to Mumbai,” while thanking the hospital team for his care.
