Disgruntled National Conference (NC) leader and six-time MLA Mubarak Gul on Wednesday deferred his scheduled press conference, saying he would not take questions from the media and would speak at an appropriate time in the future.
Gul had announced the press conference after declining party president Farooq Abdullah’s offer to appoint him as general secretary. He had expressed disappointment after Chief Minister Omar Abdullah reshuffled his Cabinet last week without including him.
After attending the swearing-in ceremony at Lok Bhavan, Gul said he had attended 20 such ceremonies but had been left out each time. He had subsequently announced that he would “spill the beans about NC”.
Addressing reporters on Wednesday, Gul said he had deferred the briefing after consulting colleagues and considering the sentiments of party workers. He cited the death of a colleague’s father earlier in the day as the reason for postponing the interaction.
“I am a fighter, and I will continue to fight,” Gul told reporters, while declining to answer questions.
The development comes amid uncertainty over Gul’s position in the ruling party following the recent Cabinet expansion and organisational changes.
On October 27, Farooq Abdullah appointed Gul as party general secretary after Ali Mohammad Sagar joined the Omar Abdullah-led Cabinet. However, a subsequent party order directed Sagar to continue as general secretary until further orders, after Gul declined the appointment.
