Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma targeted Congress leader Rahul Gandhi at the BJP’s ‘Loktantra Bachao, Arajakta Hatao’ campaign in Bihar’s Purnea district on Wednesday, triggering a political controversy with remarks linking the Congress leader to Bangladesh.
Defending the revision of electoral rolls and the removal of names such as Babar and Aurangzeb from voter lists, Sarma accused Rahul Gandhi of raising unwarranted concerns over the exercise.
Taking a dig at the Congress leader, Sarma said he, along with Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary and West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, would send Rahul Gandhi to Bangladesh, where he might win an election. He said Gandhi had been unable to win elections in Bihar, West Bengal or Assam.
Sarma also responded to Gandhi’s allegations of “vote theft”, saying the issue was not about stealing votes but about “stealing hearts”.
Referring to the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya, he said a grand temple now stood at the site where the Babri Masjid had existed for nearly 500 years, and questioned whether this could also be described as “stealing hearts”.
Speaking about the Seemanchal region spanning Bihar, Assam and West Bengal, Sarma called for a fresh Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls by the Election Commission. He reiterated that removing names such as Babar and Aurangzeb from voter lists represented a “theft of hearts” rather than a “theft of votes”.
His Bangladesh remark and references to historical and religious figures triggered political debate. The BJP launched its campaign in Bhagalpur earlier this week and is taking it to several regions as part of its outreach programme.
