The six-year-old girl admitted to PGIMER, Chandigarh, on October 28 after an alleged assault by a schoolmate in Panchkula was discharged on Wednesday following medical treatment.
The child, who has special needs, was allegedly assaulted by a Class III student inside a school in Sector 20, Panchkula. The student reportedly banged her head against a wall repeatedly and attacked her with a brick while she lay unconscious and bleeding on the classroom floor.
PGIMER provided treatment without charging the family and also bore the expenses of her private room, allowing them to focus on her recovery.
PGIMER Director Prof Vivek Lal, who personally visited the child during her hospitalisation, expressed relief over her discharge. He praised the doctors, nursing professionals and support staff for their dedication and said access to quality healthcare should not depend on a person’s financial circumstances.
The treatment was coordinated under the guidance of Prof J.K. Mahajan, Head of the Department of Paediatric Surgery. The Trauma Centre, led by Dr Raman Sharma, coordinated trauma-related care, while Medical Superintendent Prof Ashok Kumar ensured institutional support.
Prof Mahajan said the treatment required clinical expertise, patience and compassion. He expressed hope that the child would soon return to her normal routine.
The Haryana government, led by Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, had earlier announced that it would bear the child’s entire treatment cost and conduct a comprehensive safety audit of schools across the state.
