India moved within reach of a double title at the Hylo Open Super 500 in Germany as PV Sindhu and Lakshya Sen advanced to the women’s and men’s singles finals with impressive semifinal victories on Saturday.
Two-time Olympic medallist Sindhu reached her second consecutive BWF World Tour final with a straight-games win over compatriot Anmol Kharb, while Sen defeated France’s sixth seed Toma Junior Popov to book his place in the men’s singles title clash.
Fresh from her runner-up finish at the French Open last week, Sindhu defeated Kharb 21-13, 21-16 in a 38-minute semifinal. It was the first international meeting between the two Indian players. Sindhu has maintained an unbeaten run at the tournament without dropping a game.
She will face Denmark’s Line Hojmark Kjaersfeldt in the final.
At the French Open in Paris last week, Sindhu had put up a strong fight before losing 21-16, 11-21, 12-21 to world No. 1 An Se Young of South Korea, who secured her fourth title at the tournament.
Sen, meanwhile, registered a composed 21-17, 21-13 victory over Popov in 41 minutes. The win gave the Indian a 3-2 advantage in his head-to-head record against the Frenchman.
The final will be Sen’s second of the season, following his runner-up finish at the All England Open earlier this year. He will take on Denmark’s Mathias Sogaard in the title clash.
The last time Sindhu and Sen reached the finals of the same tournament was at the Syed Modi India International in 2024.
After her semifinal victory, Sindhu said she was pleased to face an Indian opponent in the last four after a long time.
“Yeah, I think I’m playing her after a very long time, and I think it’s good to see two Indians in the semifinals. But I think, you know, I was just, you know, playing my game and giving my 100% irrespective of whoever the opponent is or, you know, whatever rank she is. And I’m happy that I’m through to the finals,” she said.
Sindhu also expressed satisfaction with her performance and said she hoped to maintain the same tempo in the final.
“I think, I mean, overall, I’m happy that I played well and I hope that I continue the same tempo tomorrow as well. And I think I’m glad that, you know, I was maintaining the lead and I kept the lead going, and I finished it off in two sets. And I’m happy for that,” she added.
