Forty-eight trekkers and expedition members stranded at the high-altitude Kalindi Pass Base and Auden’s Col Base in Uttarakhand’s Uttarkashi district have been safely evacuated amid challenging weather conditions, officials said on Tuesday.
Eight trekkers and porters stranded along the Kalindi trek were airlifted to Harsil on Tuesday morning, completing the evacuation of those stranded on the route. A day earlier, 11 trekkers and porters had also been rescued from the Kalindi Pass area by helicopter.
With the latest operation, a total of 19 trekkers and porters stranded along the Kalindi route have been brought safely to the Harsil helipad. Officials said all those rescued underwent medical examinations and were found to be in good health.
In a separate operation on Monday, all 29 trekkers stranded in the Auden’s Col area were also evacuated by helicopter.
The District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Uttarkashi, said the rescue operation at the Harsil helipad was conducted in a coordinated and organised manner.
The DDMA said that in the presence of Additional District Magistrate Mukta Mishra, the helicopter pilot and other personnel involved in the operation coordinated the evacuation plan before launching the rescue effort. It added that all teams were working according to the established plan.
The rescue operations were carried out amid difficult weather conditions, with continuous rainfall across Uttarakhand since Friday disrupting road connectivity at several locations and triggering landslides. The weather also created difficulties for movement and rescue teams and affected travel and pilgrimage activities in parts of the state.
Earlier on Monday, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami visited the Disaster Control Room and reviewed the rescue operations. He took stock of the situation and the steps being taken by the administration and rescue teams to evacuate people stranded in different areas.
Meanwhile, the Char Dham Yatra resumed on Monday after an improvement in weather conditions.
