Congress MP and former Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa has criticised the BJP’s ‘Nasha Mukt Punjab Yatra’, questioning its public response and demanding accountability from the Central and Punjab governments over drug trafficking, cross-border drone activities, weapons smuggling and the law-and-order situation in the state.
Randhawa claimed that the BJP’s anti-drug campaign had failed to attract significant public participation, even in Pathankot, considered a stronghold of the party. He pointed out that the yatra’s launch venue in Pathankot did not draw a crowd of more than 3,000 people, despite the BJP’s presence in the Pathankot and Sujanpur Assembly constituencies.
According to Randhawa, the response to the campaign reflects how people in Punjab view the BJP’s efforts to address the drug menace. He maintained that the issue required concrete action rather than political campaigns and called for coordinated efforts by the Central and state governments to tackle drug abuse and trafficking.
The Congress MP also questioned the Centre’s response to Punjab’s security concerns. He said he had written several letters to Union Home Minister Amit Shah regarding drug trafficking, gangsterism, cross-border drone activities and the smuggling of weapons, but had yet to receive any concrete response or see effective action.
Randhawa said that if Amit Shah was visiting Punjab, the Union Home Minister should address these concerns instead of limiting his visit to political programmes. He called for clear answers on the security challenges facing the state.
Raising concerns over the recent violence at Lovely Professional University (LPU), Randhawa questioned the police response, stating that timely intervention could have prevented the situation from escalating.
He said protests continued for several days and disrupted traffic on the National Highway, while the police failed to take effective action at the appropriate time.
Referring to developments at Chitkara University, Lovely Professional University and other districts, Randhawa said the incidents had raised broader questions about law and order in Punjab. He stressed the need for prompt police intervention to prevent local disputes and protests from developing into larger law-and-order challenges.
