India’s men’s compound archery team stormed into the final of the Asian Games after defeating South Korea 236-229 in the semifinal at the Okazaki Chuo Sogo Park Multipurpose Square on Wednesday.
The Indian trio of Kushal Dalal, Sahil Jadhav and Ganesh Mani Ratnam Thirumuru will now face China in the gold medal match, while South Korea will take on Chinese Taipei in the bronze medal contest.
India established an early advantage in the opening end, responding to South Korea’s scores of 8, 10 and 10 with three perfect 10s in the first rotation. Both teams then produced perfect 10s in the second rotation, with India maintaining a two-point lead at 60-58.
South Korea struggled again at the start of the second end, recording an eight, followed by a 10 and a nine. India continued its consistent performance, scoring 10, nine and 10 in the first rotation. Although the Korean archers hit three 10s in the second rotation, India matched them with three perfect 10s to retain a four-point advantage at 119-115.
The Indian team extended its lead in the third end. South Korea opened with three nines, while the Indian archers hit three 10s in the first rotation. The Koreans followed two 10s with a nine in the second rotation, while India continued to score perfect 10s, taking a commanding 178-171 lead.
In the fourth end, both teams began with two 10s and a nine in the first rotation. The second rotation followed a similar pattern, as India maintained its advantage to seal a 236-229 victory and book its place in the final.
The men’s compound team’s win marks another opportunity for India to add to its gold medal tally in the discipline. Indian compound archers have already won gold in the women’s team and mixed team events at the ongoing Games.
India enjoyed its most successful Asian Games archery campaign at Hangzhou in 2023, winning a record nine medals, including five gold, two silver and two bronze. Compound archers secured all five gold medals on offer, while the recurve teams contributed a silver and a bronze.
