Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday alleged that Union Home Minister Amit Shah directly intervened in the arrest of senior party leader and Punjab co-in-charge Satyendar Jain, claiming that an Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) officer had indicated there was no plan to arrest Jain until Wednesday morning.
Kejriwal alleged that the situation changed later in the day after Shah directly contacted the ACB and ordered Jain’s arrest.
In a post on X, Kejriwal said: “Union Home Minister Amit Shah must explain why he pressured the investigating agency to get Satyendar Jain arrested. An Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) officer said that until the morning, the ACB had no plan to arrest Satyendar Jain.”
He further alleged that Shah contacted the ACB in the afternoon and instructed officials to arrest Jain, following which the AAP leader was taken into custody.
“Clearly, arrests are now being made not on the basis of whether someone has committed a crime or not, but on the basis of whom the two of them want to arrest,” Kejriwal alleged, referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Shah.
Kejriwal also questioned the circumstances surrounding the arrest, arguing that a person would ordinarily be taken into police custody when investigators require questioning or further investigation.
“If Satyendar Jain had been arrested for questioning and investigation, police would have taken him into custody,” he said.
He claimed that Jain was not taken into police custody, and alleged that this indicated that the arrest was made solely because of pressure from Shah.
The allegations come amid heightened political exchanges between the AAP and the BJP over arrests and investigations involving opposition leaders.
Kejriwal did not provide independent evidence in his statement to substantiate his allegation that Shah directly ordered the ACB to arrest Jain. The allegations could not be independently verified.
