Veteran Bengali actress Mithu Mukherjee has died at the age of 71 after a prolonged battle with cancer, according to sources at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai.
The actress’ death was also mourned by the All Indian Cine Workers Association (AICWA), which paid tribute to her on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Mukherjee made her cinematic debut with the Bengali film Shesh Parba in 1971 and went on to become a familiar face in Bengali and Hindi cinema during the 1970s and 1980s.
In its tribute, AICWA remembered the actress for her performances in acclaimed Bengali films including Marjina Abdulla, Nishi Kanya, Mouchak, Swayamsiddha, Hotel Snow Fox, Bhagyachakra, Sandhi, Father and Ashrita.
She also appeared in Hindi films such as Khaan Dost, Safed Jhooth, Dillagi and Do Ladke Dono Kadke.
“Her passing has left the entire Bengali film industry in deep shock and mourning,” AICWA said, describing Mukherjee as an integral part of the film fraternity whose contribution would continue to be remembered by audiences and future generations.
The association also highlighted her contribution to Bengali cinema, Ollywood and the wider Indian film industry, paying tribute to her performances and legacy.
Mukherjee was last seen in the Bengali film Ashrita, released in 1990. The film revolved around a woman who, after marrying into a contemporary family, rebels against the maltreatment by her in-laws and decides to take action with support from another educated family.
AICWA extended its condolences to Mukherjee’s family and the film fraternity, saying her films, performances and legacy would continue to be remembered with love and respect.
