Tripura Police have alerted the Border Security Force (BSF) to step up vigilance along the India-Bangladesh border to prevent nine accused in an attack on BSF personnel from fleeing to Bangladesh. Two jawans and a company commander were critically injured in the incident.
Police said the FIR registered by the BSF named 19 attackers. Ten accused, including three women, have been arrested, while a search operation is underway to trace the remaining nine.
A senior police official said the accused might cross the international border and take shelter in Bangladesh to evade arrest. BSF Inspector General, Tripura Frontier, Princee Rani, and Sepahijala District Superintendent of Police Bijoy Debbarma visited the Ashabari border area on Tuesday. The BSF IG also met Chief Minister Manik Saha and briefed him about the incident.
According to police, the attack took place on Monday after BSF personnel spotted Indian and Bangladeshi smugglers allegedly involved in the illegal cross-border trade of ganja. The jawans apprehended an Indian smuggler, while the Bangladeshi smugglers fled. Another Indian smuggler allegedly escaped and told villagers that BSF personnel had assaulted him.
Following this, around 50 men and women allegedly surrounded a BSF vehicle and attacked the personnel, leaving three seriously injured. The attackers also allegedly snatched a Pump Action Gun from a jawan and damaged the vehicle. One of the attackers was also injured.
Tension continued in the area on Wednesday, prompting the BSF, Tripura State Rifles and police to conduct a joint foot march as part of an area-domination exercise.
In a statement, the BSF said it remained committed to securing the international border and preventing smuggling and other unlawful activities. It urged local residents to cooperate in maintaining peace and warned that attempts to obstruct or intimidate personnel performing their duties would be dealt with firmly.
Tripura shares an 856-km international border with Bangladesh, with the neighbouring country surrounding the state on three sides. The state has witnessed previous attacks on security personnel linked to alleged cross-border smuggling. BSF Deputy Commandant Deepak Kumar Mandal died after being run over by a vehicle driven by smugglers in 2017, while Tripura Police Sub-Inspector Durga Kumar Hrangkhawl was killed in a similar incident in 2019.
