A nursing staff member was found dead inside a toilet at the state-run NRS Medical College and Hospital (NRSMCH) in Kolkata on Thursday, prompting a police investigation and raising questions from her husband over the circumstances surrounding her death.
The woman had been on night duty at the High Dependency Unit (HDU) of the hospital’s gynaecology department on Wednesday. Her colleagues reportedly began searching for her after she went missing from her seat and found her body inside a hospital toilet early Thursday.
Her husband has questioned the circumstances of the death and requested that the post-mortem examination be conducted at another hospital. He said there were no visible injury marks on the body, while no suicide note was found. He also pointed out that her mobile phone was lying beside her body when she was found.
The hospital authorities accepted the family’s request and said the autopsy would be conducted at a government hospital chosen by the husband.
State Health Minister Dr Sharadwat Mukherjee visited NRSMCH and held discussions with hospital authorities as senior Kolkata Police officers also reached the facility.
Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Kunal Agarwal said the Homicide Branch had taken charge of the investigation and three locations within the hospital premises had been sealed. Police have also seized a stretcher and are examining CCTV footage from the hospital.
Agarwal said the venue for the post-mortem had not yet been finalised and that the police would proceed according to the family’s wishes.
The incident has revived memories of the August 2024 rape and murder of a junior doctor at Kolkata’s R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital. The doctor’s body had been recovered from a seminar room in the emergency department of the state-run hospital.
