India wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan scripted history on Sunday, becoming the country’s highest run-scorer in men’s T20 Internationals in a single calendar year during the fifth and final match against New Zealand at Seddon Park.
Kishan smashed a brilliant 61 off 32 deliveries to help India post 191/8, surpassing former T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav’s record for the most runs by an Indian in the format in a calendar year.
The left-hander has now accumulated 1,220 runs in 37 innings in 2026, overtaking Suryakumar’s previous record of 1,164 runs from 31 innings in 2022.
Coming into Sunday’s match, Kishan had scored 1,159 runs and needed just six more to move past Suryakumar. He achieved the milestone early in his innings.
With this achievement, Kishan has moved to second place among players from Full Member nations for the most T20I runs in a calendar year and fourth overall. Austria’s Karanbir Singh leads the list with 1,488 runs, followed by Pakistan’s Mohammad Rizwan (1,326) and Bahrain’s Fiaz Ahmed (1,251).
Kishan also reached another significant milestone during the innings, completing 2,000 runs in T20 Internationals. He achieved the feat in just 1,345 balls, becoming the third-fastest Indian to reach the landmark in terms of deliveries faced.
Abhishek Sharma holds the Indian record, having reached 2,000 T20I runs in 1,024 balls, while Suryakumar occupies second place with 1,164 deliveries.
The milestone innings was particularly significant for Kishan after an inconsistent start to the series. He had scored just one and zero in the first and fourth T20Is, respectively, while a low-grade right adductor strain forced him to miss the second and third matches.
Needing 45 runs to complete 2,000 T20I runs before the final match, Kishan responded with a commanding performance to achieve both personal milestones in the series decider.
