Pathankot Police has busted a suspected cross-border heroin smuggling module with the arrest of two alleged operatives, including a woman, and recovered 7.823 kg of heroin in a coordinated two-stage operation, Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said on Wednesday.

The operation was conducted as part of the state government’s Yudh Nashian Virudh campaign, launched under the directions of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann to make Punjab drug-free.

The arrested accused have been identified as Gurpanth, a resident of Village Vadala in Amritsar Rural, and his alleged associate Harmanjeet Kaur, a resident of Dhianpur in Gurdaspur district.

DGP Gaurav Yadav said further investigation was underway, including digital and technical analysis, to establish the wider narcotics network, trace financial transactions and identify other persons allegedly involved in the smuggling operation.

Sharing details of the operation, Pathankot Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Manpreet Singh said that, acting on credible intelligence, a Special Branch team intercepted Gurpanth and recovered 590 grams of heroin from his possession.

During sustained questioning and forensic examination of his mobile phone, police developed further leads and conducted a raid at a rented accommodation in Fatehgarh Churian, the SSP said.

The raid led to the arrest of Harmanjeet Kaur and the recovery of an additional 7.233 kg of heroin from the premises, taking the total seizure in the operation to 7.823 kg.

Pakistani markings, digital evidence under scrutiny

According to SSP Manpreet Singh, preliminary investigations have indicated suspected cross-border links. Packets bearing distinctive seal impressions with Pakistani markings were also recovered, he said.

Police are examining digital and technical evidence to establish the extent of the network. Videos relating to contraband consignments, along with financial transaction records and account details, have also surfaced during the investigation and are being scrutinised for further leads.

DGP Gaurav Yadav said the investigation would focus on tracing the wider smuggling network, following the financial trail and identifying other individuals connected with the alleged operation.

In this connection, FIR No. 155, dated October 12, 2026, has been registered under Section 21 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act at Police Station Sadar, Pathankot.

The investigation is ongoing.
