Beijing, China, will host the BWF Sudirman Cup Finals 2027 from April 21 to May 2, the Badminton World Federation (BWF) announced on Wednesday.

The tournament will mark Beijing’s first staging of a BWF Individual or Team World Championships since it hosted the Sudirman Cup in 2005. The Chinese capital also hosted the BWF World Championships in 1987.

“China has long played an important role in the development and global success of badminton, and we are thrilled to bring the BWF Sudirman Cup Finals back to Beijing in 2027,” BWF President Khunying Patama Leeswadtrakul said.

“Beijing holds a special place in badminton history. From hosting the BWF World Championships in 1987 and the BWF Sudirman Cup in 2005 to showcasing our sport at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, the city has been the stage for some of badminton’s most memorable moments,” she added.

“Returning to Beijing for one of our premier team championships honours that heritage while highlighting the continued growth and global appeal of our sport,” the BWF president said.

The 2027 edition will also usher in a new era for badminton’s Major Championships. From 2027, the Sudirman Cup Finals will adopt an extended 12-day format, with the team events expanding to 24 member associations.

According to the BWF, the changes are intended to create two-week global sporting spectacles, enhance fan engagement, unlock greater commercial opportunities and take badminton to more markets worldwide.

The federation said host cities for the BWF World Championships 2027, the BWF World Tour Finals from 2027 to 2030, and the Thomas and Uber Cup Finals 2028 will be announced at a later date.

The Sudirman Cup Finals, held every two years, is the World Mixed Team Championships and tests the all-round strength of participating teams. Each tie comprises five matches: men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles.

The inaugural Sudirman Cup was held at Bung Karno Stadium in Indonesia in 1989, featuring 28 teams. Indonesia won the first edition on home soil, which remains the country’s only title in the competition.

South Korea won the next two editions in 1991 and 1993, before China established itself as the dominant force in the tournament. China won every edition from 1995 to 2023 except in 2003 and 2017, when South Korea emerged victorious. China remains the most successful team, with 13 titles.

The most recent edition was held in Xiamen, China, in 2025, featuring 16 of the world’s leading badminton teams. Hosts China claimed the title by defeating South Korea 3-1 in the final.

India, meanwhile, have never won a medal at the Sudirman Cup. The country’s best performances came in 2011 and 2017, when it reached the quarter-finals.
