The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) staged protests at 36 district headquarters across Punjab on Wednesday over the murder of young social activist Parvinder Singh Jhota, who had campaigned against drugs in Mansa and was shot dead during a Facebook Live session. The party demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the killing and submitted memorandums addressed to Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria through Deputy Commissioners.
Anil Sareen, General Secretary of Punjab BJP, said party workers held sit-ins and raised slogans against the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government across the state. Through the memorandums, the BJP sought an impartial investigation into the murder.
According to the BJP, Parvinder Singh had been raising his voice against drug trafficking and the alleged illegal sale of narcotic substances in Mansa for a long time. He had consistently campaigned to protect young people from drug addiction. His killing in broad daylight on October 13 has raised serious concerns about the safety of people who speak out against drugs, the party said.
BJP leaders also pointed out that the victim’s father had named the local MLA in his statement, describing the matter as particularly serious. They further cited eyewitness accounts that the alleged assailant spoke to someone over the phone immediately before opening fire, arguing that this raised questions about the possibility of a wider conspiracy.
The party questioned the functioning of the Punjab Police and called for a comprehensive investigation into every aspect of the case. It also demanded the strictest possible action against all those found responsible.
BJP Raises Five Demands Before the Governor
In its memorandum, the BJP placed five key demands before the Governor:
- CBI investigation: The investigation into Parvinder Singh Jhota’s murder should be transferred to the CBI without delay.
- Preservation of digital evidence: All relevant digital evidence, including the alleged assailant’s call records, WhatsApp chats, CCTV footage and the Facebook Live stream, should be secured immediately.
- Security for the victim’s family: Immediate police protection should be provided to the victim’s family, particularly the minor children.
- Probe into the drug trafficking network: A comprehensive investigation should be conducted into Punjab’s drug trafficking network and the political patronage it allegedly receives.
- Strict action against those involved: Stringent action should be taken against every person found involved in the crime, without political pressure or interference.
BJP Calls Murder Evidence of Deteriorating Law and Order
The BJP described the killing as a glaring example of the deteriorating law and order situation in Punjab and alleged that drug trafficking was operating amid a nexus that required thorough investigation.
The party alleged that people who speak out against drugs are being openly targeted while the state government remains a silent spectator. It termed the murder of an activist who had campaigned against drugs an attack on democracy.
The BJP urged the Governor to intervene immediately and ensure that the rule of law is upheld in Punjab.
