New Delhi, November 8, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Traditional account books and modern digital devices shared space during Diwali celebrations at business establishments across India, as traders worshipped everything from bahi-khata ledgers to iPads, laptops, computers and mobile phones, reflecting the changing face of Indian commerce.

The practice, encouraged by the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) for several years, represents an effort by the trading community to embrace technology while preserving customs associated with the festival.

Traders performed Lakshmi-Ganesh puja at shops and business establishments in cities, towns and villages, praying for prosperity, growth and economic well-being.

CAIT also hosted a special Diwali puja at the Delhi residence of its Secretary General and Chandni Chowk MP Praveen Khandelwal. Trade leaders and representatives of business organisations attended the ceremony, where Acharya Pandit Pramod Shastri conducted the Vedic rituals.

The venue was decorated with flowers, rose petals and earthen lamps. A large artistic depiction of a traditional Indian trader holding a computer highlighted the integration of technology into the country’s business landscape.

The idols of Lord Ganesha and Goddess Mahalakshmi were ceremonially anointed with Panchamrit. Traders also worshipped Lord Hanuman, whom they regard as Sankatmochan, symbolically expressing their resolve to protect traditional Indian businesses amid the growing influence of global retail corporations.

Khandelwal described Diwali as a confluence of Indian culture, faith, tradition and economic prosperity, calling it both an important religious festival and the country’s biggest economic celebration.

He said the worship of digital devices alongside traditional account books demonstrated that traders were adopting modern tools without abandoning their cultural roots.

Khandelwal also said Indian-made products had witnessed strong demand during this year’s Diwali season, crediting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal to promote Swadeshi and buy domestically manufactured goods.

Earthen lamps, decorative items, textiles, handicrafts, sweets, toys, household products and traditional gifts made in India reportedly recorded strong demand, benefiting domestic manufacturers, artisans, small businesses and women entrepreneurs.

He said the Vocal for Local campaign was increasingly taking the shape of a national economic movement, adding that buying Indian-made products could strengthen domestic manufacturing, generate employment and support local entrepreneurs.
